Buoy

Turning harbour waste into public space

Shape and movement inspired by buoys

Locally recycled, locally produced

  • Buoy is a circular public object that explores how local waste streams can become part of future urban infrastructure. Inspired by the floating movement of maritime buoys, the project consists of a series of swinging public elements that encourage interaction, balance, and collective use.

The forms are produced from discarded maritime ropes collected from the harbour of Rotterdam, mechanically recycled in the Netherlands, and robotically 3D printed back into the city. Their colours emerge directly from the recycled ropes themselves, without added pigments or coatings, making the material origin visible within the final objects.

Positioned between public artwork, urban furniture, and material system, Buoy transforms circularity into a physical and shared experience. Through movement and bodily interaction, the project makes local recycling processes tangible, proposing a future in which cities continuously regenerate public space through their own material ecosystems.
