Stratum
Geological layers translated into furniture
18-meter multifunctional reception desk
Multiple uses in one continuous form
-
Stratum is an 18-meter multifunctional reception furniture designed for the entrance of an office building in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Inspired by geological layering, the piece unfolds through a continuous sequence of curves, folds, and surfaces that organize the space while inviting different types of use.
Functioning simultaneously as seating, reception desk, planter, standing workspace, and leaning table, Stratum acts as both furniture and spatial infrastructure. Produced from 880 kg of recycled plastic through robotic layer-by-layer printing, the object resembles a contemporary form of “stone,” echoing the stratification and mass of natural rock formations.
Installed at the Picnic headquarters and developed in collaboration with DENC architects, Stratum introduces a tactile, durable centerpiece that merges circulation, work, and rest into a single sculptural gesture.
